The California Surf Museum honored Hawaiian beachboy and surfing legend Albert ‘Rabbit’ Kekai. The personable 87-year old Rabbit is the latest in an exclusive line of watermen to be recognized at the museum’s annual festival. His surfing career spans from the time of the classic, laid-back style of the late Duke Kahanamoku to the energy-driven kinetics of today’s hard-charging icons. Rabbit’s strength and ability to carve more radical maneuvers on the newer ‘hot curl’ boards at his home beaches at Waikiki led to his reputation as one of the earliest ‘hot-doggers’. One of the first noseriders as well, he has left a lasting imprint on how contests are judged. Over several decades, Rabbit the Beachboy taught scores of movie stars, sports figures and celebrities the finer points of surfing. A humble and generous man, he now heads the Rabbit Kekai Foundation, which is dedicated to helping children through surfing and education. Rabbit has been a regular visitor to Oceanside’s beaches and contests since the 1960s.
Exhibitions. This educational, informative exhibit celebrates a small fraternity of surfers who, by their exceptional conceptual abilities and considerable crafting talent, radically altered surfboard design and, in some cases, manufacturing techniques since the 1900s. It's a dynamic array of talent, each personality accompanied by photos and the respective signature board. It traces surfboard design from its early roots in the Pacific to the tri-fin Thruster that helped solidify Simon Andersen's place in surfing history.
- George Freeth - this Irish-Hawaiian whose aquatic exploits are now become legend, is reputedly the first man ever to ride a surfboard on the California coast.
- Duke Kahanamoku - traveled internationally with his surfboards, and gave many away as gifts. Throughout his life he was known as surfing's ambassador to the world.
- Tom Blake - inventor of the hollow board and the first person believed to have put a fin on a board. His designs acted as catalyst for the earliest mass-manufactured boards.
- John Kelly - (along with buddy Fran Heath) pared several inches off each side of the tail of his old board, thus creating the “hot curl” shape, which performed far better in big-wave situations.
- Lorrin "Whitey" Harrison - a native Californian, Whitey earned his stripes at the Pacific Ready-Cut Homes company, whipping out four huge laminated boards a day, for $100 per month. His famous barn in San Juan Capistrano became the gathering spot of many of today's legendary shapers.
- Bob Simmons - applied what he learned of aero-and hydrodynamics at CalTech to the balsa boards he was noted for Grafting. He was also one of the first to use resin and fiberglass cloth, which added strength and lessened weight.
