People dance for many good reasons -- it's good exercise, one develops good posture, dancing burns calories, one becomes more agile and graceful, and dancing aids both in physical and mental development.

Our mission it to provide training in a supportive environment for both aspiring professionals and enthusiastic amateur students.
In 1983, The Black Mountain Dance Centre opened a one room studio in Rancho Penasquitos with a handful of students and very high hopes.
Our goal was to offer superior training in classical ballet, the root of all theatrical dance forms. We wanted to play a major role in building a high quality,  home grown arts product in our community. We knew that this could occur only if we committed to providing daily training by the best instructors in San Diego.
In 1990, the BMDC moved to larger quarters in Carmel Mountain Ranch.
We offer a wide range of dance instruction.
Many of our alumni have joined major dance companies or have graduated from dance departments of major universities. Our "Teacher Training" has also produced excellent results.
Black Mountain Dance Centre offers:
Daily training in Classical Ballet with internationally credentialed dance professionals.
Classes in Repertoire, Pointe, Modern Dance, Jazz, Character, Tap, and Musical Theatre.
Performance opportunities through our resident company, Southern California Youth Ballet
International Cecchetti exams offered annually.
A limited number of Scholarships are available for financially disadvantaged students who are motivated, talented, and achieve intermediate ballet technique level.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
INTRODUCTION TO DANCE (Ages 3-5) This course explores ballet and creative basics and focuses on developing the skills of the young dancer. Coordination, rhythm, and the concept of direction and interaction with others are stressed. Terminology is introduced. The Introduction to Dance class gives young dancers the confidence to excel in the next levels of dance.
PRE-PRIMARY AND PRIMARY BALLET (Ages 5 - 7) These beginner classes introduce the child to the rudiments of the classical ballet discipline, character and folk dance, and some balletic pantomime.  Proper technique and terminology (French) are encouraged. Before the age of  7 or 8 children are too young for formal ballet training. The bones are too soft and muscular connections are insufficiently established. Attention spans will significantly lengthen by the age of  8.
CLASSICAL BALLET (Ages 8-Adult)
STANDARDS & GRADES 1-6,
 INTERMEDIATE, and ADVANCED.
These classes provide the theory and practice of the classical school of ballet. Dancers develop technique and strength as well as proficiency, expressiveness and musicality, Serious ballet students from age 8 to 10 should take two ballet classes a week. An average of at least one additional class per week per year should be added to the schedule from the age of 8.
FREESTYLE AND CECCHETTI classes are available to prepare students for the international exams held all over the world by the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing
REPERTOIRE, POINTE, AND PAS de DEUX are added to the curriculum for the more advanced students.
TAP I, II (Ages 5 - 7)  Basic rhythms and steps will be taught and combined into dances.  Dancers will work in groups and in solo situations, and proper tap terminology will be stressed along with the technique.
TAP III, IV (Ages 8 - Adult)  Basic rhythms and steps will be taught and combined into dances.  There will be practice in working in groups and in solos.  For the more advanced students, technique, terminology and performance will be stressed. Tap promotes coordination and a sense of rhythmic patters and helps in retention of movement patters.
TAP PRODUCTION  Only offered to students who are concurrently enrolled in a tap technique class. The production class will create dances to perform at various venues and help students improve their performing and auditioning skills.
ADULT TAP (Age in double digits)  Open to adults interested in beginning or continuing their tap training. Emphasis on having fun while learning technique, turns and routines. Performing opportunities will be made available if desired.
JAZZ (Ages 10 - Adult)  A theatrical form of dance styles and techniques.  The course will include musical comedy, rock, lyrical, modern, Afro-Cuban, and Hip Hop. Ballet preparation is strongly recommended.
MODERN DANCE (8 - Adult)  In Modern Dance, the fundamentals of contemporary dance are introduced.  While much of the class work is structured around modern dance technique and principles, time is also allocated for creative problem solving through movement.
