The eventual goal of the Pasadena Museum of California is to be recognized as the leading voice devoted to advancing the appreciation and understanding of California art and design Since its opening, the Pasadena Museum of California Art has developed a number of signature exhibitions, including the California Design Biennial, a juried exhibition of the best in fashion, graphic design, consumer products, furniture and transportation from California. Informed by the state's rich mixture of cultures and inspired by its impressive geography, California art has long been defined by a spirit of freedom and experimentation.
In addition, the Pasadena Museum of California Art Project Room is a series of contemporary site-specific art installations by early to mid-career artists. The Project Room at the Pasadena Museum of California Art is a 700-square foot gallery devoted to installations by early and mid-career California artists. Artists chosen to participate are charged with transforming the space through site-specific installations. With a selection of artists working in a variety of media, the Project Room was designed to present a vital cross-section of the diverse work being produced in California.
Museum founders Robert and Arlene Oltman are long-time Pasadena residents and art collectors. The impetus to build a museum devoted to California art grew in recent years as the Oltmans' collecting activities began to focus on artists from California.
In 1999 the Oltmans commissioned the Los Angeles architectural firm MDA Johnson Favaro Architecture and Urban Design to create the museum. Ground was broken for the building in December 2000, and the museum became open to the public in June of 2002. Pasadena Museum of California Art is a 30,000 SF three-story, mixed-use facility. An open-air staircase accentuated by ever-changing natural light from an oculus above creates a dramatic entrance into the museum. The stairs lead to the second-floor lobby, 8,000 square foot gallery spaces, a bookstore, and a community room. The third floor includes a 2,000 square foot Founders’ Gallery and a vast rooftop terrace (4,000 square feet) that is accessible to the public during scheduled hours. The terrace commands a breathtaking vista of the 1927 City Hall dome and the San Gabriel Mountains to the north.
Bookstore. The museum bookstore offers a wide selection of books and other media, as well as unique gifts. The store is open during regular museum hours.
Free parking is available on the ground level of the museum and additional public parking is available across the street on Union.
Have Your Event in the Museum. The Pasadena Museum of California Art boasts a Rooftop Terrace with panoramic views of Old Town Pasadena, historic City Hall and the San Gabriel Mountains. Your guests will be welcomed by a breathtaking, open-air foyer crowned with a contemporary sculpture. 8,000 square feet of contemporary style gallery space is available.
