Dr. Lin is qualified to use a variety of TCM techniques in her treatments, including: acupuncture, herbal medicine, moxibustion, electrical stimulation, acupressure, therapeutic massage, cupping, infra-red heat therapy, hot packs.
Treatments generally start with an interview to carefully assess the patient's condition, and may include TCM diagnostic methods such as taking pulse, viewing the tongue, and questions relating to the patient's lifestyle and bodily functions. After the consultation, Dr. Lin will recommend a course of treatment tailored to the health goals of the patient. The number of treatments needed and the techniques used depend on the particular condition being treated, its severity, and the overall health of the patient. Acute conditions can usually be treated in a two-week course consisting of 6 to 8 sessions, while chronic conditions may require a longer course. In order to maintain the body's long-term balance, it is recommended that the patient comes in once a month even after symptoms of the treated condition have vanished.
The primary treatment technique will be acupuncture, where sterile disposable needles are inserted at various points along the body to stimulate and rebalance the patient's energy. The patient may experience a range of sensations around the insertion point, ranging from none to a heavy, tingling vibration. Each acupuncture session usually lasts between 20-40 minutes. After the needles are placed, the patient rests on the treatment bed to allow the movement of energy to take effect. At the end of the session the needles are removed and Dr. Lin takes a follow-up evaluation. For certain conditions, a complementary herbal formula will be prescribed along with the acupuncture treatment to expedite or reinforce the healing effect.
Dr. Lin enjoys getting to know each of her patients, solving their medical "puzzles", and sharing her knowledge to enable her patients to take an active role in maintaining their health. Dr. Lin views education as an important part of treatment. She takes the time to share with patients common sense ways to monitor their own body, along with advice on diet and prevention so that minor problems do not become severe disabilities.
